Air Pollution ‘Causes’ Obesity

Thanks to LegIron for the info:

If you scroll down, you find this link:

Essentially, it says that a few parts per million of utterly minuscule particulates might affect your metabolism in such a way as to cause your body to transform anything that you eat into fat. God only knows how these few particulates get to affect every cell in your gut. Let’s think. You inhale, say, half a litre or air. In that air is ONE utterly minuscule particle of diesel exhaust. That particle is absorbed into your bloodstream via your lungs. According to that study, that particle somehow manages to stay intact until it reaches your gut where it goes to work on your body cells.

The size of the particulates in question are generally taken to be 2.5μmetre. That is, 2.5 millionths of a metre. Human body cells range in size enormously, but let us take red blood cells. They measure in volume 100 μm³. I think, but am not sure, that the 2.5 refers to the the width of the particle, in which case, its volume is about 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 very approx, which is a volume of 15 μm³. So, somehow, that particle will wreak havoc, not only in one individual cell, but in many other cells at the same time.

Your body has billions of cells. How many breaths would you need to inhale for enough cells in your gut to be damaged in such a way that they turn your food into fat? But, uno momento, is it not the gut flora which work on your food? I cannot find a size for gut flora, but I found this in Wikipedia:

The human body carries about 100 trillion microorganisms in its intestines, a number ten times greater than the total number of human cells in the body.

So the gut flora must be exceedingly tiny. So we must imagine a particle which would seem to be the size of a mountain in comparison with an individual gut flora microbe, banging about and converting that florum into a fat generator.

The whole idea is unutterably, abysmally beyond ridicule.

But there is a hidden message.

We all know that smokers tend to be somewhat skinnier that non-smokers. The reason given is that smoking suppresses appetite. How many times have we seen, “I stopped smoking and now I enjoy my food much better”. “Enjoy my food much better” means ‘pile on the pounds’.

So this research is intended to counter that idea. It ‘proves’ that smoking has the opposite affect, not because it makes you eat more, but because it turns more of your food into fat.

I still do not understand how these leaches and charlatans get money. I really do not.

Bacteria are measured in micrometres. Particulates are measured on nanometres, a thousand millionth of a metre. Even body cells regard them as insignificantly tiny.
